Run Across America - 9th September - Day 88

This time next week I will be hopefully relaxing in New York having known I‘d accomplished something of great satisfaction and a very rewarding personal goal. The last week will be tough as I know that it’s all coming to an end, but I will try to enjoy it and savour the moments as when I get back home I don’t want to have any regrets.

Today I was running from Hagerstown, Maryland towards the City of Waynesboro, which was over the border into Pennsylvania again. This time I was hoping that the mountain roads had become less elevated and more flat but by the look of the first mountain after coming out of Waynesboro it seemed quite big and once again I had to run/walk to the top with Matt pushing the bike.

My legs over the last few days have been feeling dead and to be honest at the end of the 40 miles session today I couldn’t wait to have a cold bath and get to bed early in order to give my body a rest for a few hours. Once over the mountain hill in Waynesboro the next town we were heading towards that Matt has been getting excited about is Gettysburg.

Quick history on Gettysburg – This most famous and most important Civil War Battle occurred over three hot summer days, July 1 to July 3, 1863, around the small market town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It began as a skirmish but by its end involved 160,000 Americans. It’s an important part of American history so please do some research.

It felt very bizarre running towards this place of significant American importance knowing thousands of soldiers had walked the fields next to me over 150 years ago. Once reaching Gettysburg, Matt started snapping away with his camera, with all the important signs plastered around town telling the story of this great battle from yesteryear.

Running the scenic routes across America has had some very boring times, but then at times we will come across a real gem, such as the case with Gettysburg. Whilst running towards the East coast of America I’ve realised that there seems to be more history involved and that’s just by looking at the little towns I run through daily.

After running through Gettysburg we then changed route onto a new road (Highway East 30) towards a City called York, which we should almost reach tomorrow evening as only its only a half day of running.

I’m writing this journal early morning (8am) as I felt so tired yesterday and needed to get some shut eye after a tough massage from Natasha.

PS - The three-amigo moustaches are coming on nicely and we have even agreed that the pictures taken when in New York City are going to show off our features.
