Run Across America - 7th September - Day 86
The morning started with me waking up with a view of a church door and a graveyard. It was a weird feeling seeing this type of surroundings, and in the night I kept waking up thinking there was people outside, but looking outside in the dark at a church I just closed my eyes.
The morning started early as I was ready and on the road by 7.30am and heading for my first two biggish mountain hills into a town called Frostburg. Once I finally got to the top of the mountain roads I entered Frostburg and the first thing I saw was a flag sign shop, so I walked in and trying to blag a UK flag with the American one also, but they only had the American flag in stock (surprise, surprise). I told them I was just running through, so they kindly donated me an American flag worth $25.
The team went looking in the town for a bike inner tube and also a new bike tyre so Matt could get back on the road and keep me company as well as get his 1000 miles in. The rest of the morning session was completed going mainly downhill, but it was very hot that I was sweating so much.
The afternoon session was a completely different contrast and within 20 minutes of starting the sun disappeared and the rain came out with some loud thunderstorms. The rain got so bad that Matt and I had to climb up some gravel and under some trees for cover. It was a funny sight seeing to grown lads with no t-shirts on standing under a small tree. The rain finally stopped after 20 minutes and we continued on, but with soaking trainers and clothing. Once at the RV we quickly got changed had a cup of tea and moved on to finish the last 10 miles.
The last 10miles were draining as the first 5 miles were uphill, which was very exhausting, but once at the top it was the most magnificent view of the Maryland countryside and the sign at the top said you could see 3 states when it’s a clear view. Once Matt and I took some photo’s it was back onto the road, but it was all the way downhill to the RV which was waiting at a BP gas station. Another 40 miles completed with only 346 miles left to New York City.
