Run Across America - 26th August - Day 74
It was a good day of running as we were heading towards Indianapolis City. The start time for today was nearly 30 minutes later than usual, as we had to drive from the campsite, which was 30 miles from the start point. The weather was hot but there was a breeze throughout the day making it comfortable. Matt joined me on the bike, as it’s now a routine he has got into. I still can’t comprehend him even thinking about biking 1000 miles to New York City as he didn’t prepare for this type of trip.
The first 10 miles was running along downtown Indianapolis, which as you can imagine had some very dodgy areas but it was daytime so I didn’t feel threatened. The RV was parked up in the middle of downtown and when Natasha said she wanted to look for postcards I didn’t think it was a wise idea, but I let her go for a walk anyway. Natasha was back on the RV within 5 minutes after realising it was not the place to be finding postcards. The next 10 miles was the one I’d been looking forward to and in the distance you could see the City’s skyscrapers. Just on the outskirts of the City you could also view two stadiums (RCA Dome - Indianapolis Colts & Victory Field – Indiana Indians). The latter was our first passing and without hesitation I decided on asking the stadium staff if it was possible to have a picture on the pitch, they agreed on taking Matt and I on and they took our photos on the pitch and in the dug out together. The RCA dome was much harder and as it being a Sunday there were not much staff on duty, so they denied us access and we were gutted but at least we tried.
After heading out of the City I was back running through downtown territory. There is such a vast difference in social wellbeing within a few blocks of each other and America is meant to be “The land of the free”, but Matt and I thought with lots of the buildings being empty why don’t the government place the homeless within the buildings!
The team are staying at a Yogi Bear campsite just outside Greenfield and there is lots of Yogi Bears all around. We thought the site had some history but it turns out it’s just a franchise business they bought into. We only have 22 days tomorrow before finally arriving in New York and to be honest after 2310 miles run so far I am getting sick of running.
