Run Across America - 14th August - Day 62
The day started at 07:30am with my good buddy Matt joining me on the bike for 20 miles. We set off from the gas station “trucker park” in Hamilton and started to head down Highway 36 (East), which we have been heading down since crossing over the Kansas border nearly 500 miles ago. The morning session was pretty cool weatherwise and Matt did seem to enjoy it more even though he has developed a sore left knee. My left knee is now more comfortable when running and I don’t have to where the knee brace at the moment, so I got Matt to where it as an extra support.
The 40 miles of running today was heading into Livingston County where for a lunch break we all went into ‘Dairy Queen’ to each have a delicious milkshake. Once we had taken our time drinking the milkshakes the next stop was a swimming pool, which the hotel we parked at let us use. I had a quick dunk with only my top torso entering the water before heading back to the morning session finish point. The next 10 miles were tough as the heat came out and I began to sweat so much more than in the morning. There were lots of road works on the highway after leaving Livingston, which made it very difficult and uncomfortable to run on. I did manage to do some stretches on a roller truck as the driver couldn’t believe firstly I was running on such a hot day but when I said my final destination was New York he jumped off his truck and shook my hand for good luck.
The last 10 miles were completed in cooler conditions and Natasha joined me for company and to push me along quicker to the 40 miles mark. I did run slower today as I have had a few niggles with firstly my shoulders and also my gluteus muscles (bum).
Today we worked out that I have now covered 1900 miles and to be honest I can’t wait for all the running to stop and just hold my two girls in my arms and of course my Mama. It gets so mentally tough to get through a day and with Annie having her wisdom teeth out yesterday I do feel guilty that I’m not there supporting her and also not being a good Dad. I hope people reading these Blogs realise that the “Run Across America” is no holiday and all the team find it hard at times and just want to fly home and have all of our home comforts back.
