Run Across America - 7th July - Day 24

It was a good morning for running as we left the campsite around 07:30am to head to the finish point from the day before. Once we set off from the gas station for another day Natasha joined me for 20 miles but she used the bicycle instead as she still has a dodgy knee and can’t put to much pressure on her left leg. The road was flat and not much of an incline, but the wind was blowing hard and Natasha did find it hard to control the bike, so she finished after the 20 mile session. The morning session took around 4 hours until we stopped off on the lay by to meet the RV and have some lunch. I also had a quick power nap of around 40 minutes before setting off again for another 20 mile afternoon.

The afternoon session started off well heading for Salina City, Utah but there was a haze all over this small City, which smelt of smoke. I later learnt that there were some big fires nearby, which was covering 160,000 acres of land. I went through Salina before we decided for safety reasons (the Interstate had been shut down) that I would end it at the 30 mile mark as the next 10 miles were through some wooded area near one of the fires.

The evening has started early, but we are covered by a haze of smoke, so it’s not the most comfortable of nights. Alex cooked spaghetti bolognaise tonight which was again top notch and we made a quick video discussing Trevor and the changes he has made during the trip. Tomorrow (Sunday) is my little girl Poppy’s birthday at home with Annie the organiser with some of my friends going to be in attendance. I am using the webcam in the morning to see Poppy in her birthday dress and blowing out her 1st candle.

We hope that tomorrow the fire over Utah has calmed down and we get moving quickly and out of the way of it before it causes more problems.

Sound of the day – Fire engines all afternoon
