Run Across America - 12th July - Day 29

It was my toughest day by far, both mentally and physically. It became a hard day when I realised the mountains my friend Martin (who has just completed the run across America) was talking about were just in front of me. Martin emailed me to inform me that when I run these mountains I should take it easy, as they are tough. The gradient was around 8% which, when running up them for nearly 15 miles does get to your legs in the end (think of gas hill for those that know and run up it for 15 miles).

I still managed my 40 miles but it was a struggle (mentally) and I did feel like saying enough for the day at 30 miles, but I knew I’d regret it if the miles weren’t completed as I’m on a schedule and yesterday we missed a day because of the RV changeover in Salt Lake City.

The view today was the best yet when I finally got to the top of the mountains in Utah, and when looking down it was mouth watering and made it worthwhile (if that’s possible). The last 10 miles were either downhill or on straight road, so I got back in the flow a bit and moved on to the 40 mile mark. I am getting into the habit of humming to myself (to get through the day). My friend Cyril was doing it when running the Seni Extreme 200 and now I know why he did it, for “the best company in the world is your own”.

Another day completed and all I’m doing now is taking it one day at a time and not rushing into thinking about New York City just yet as I still have over 2000 miles of running to finish.
