Run Across America - 11th July - Day 28

Today there was no running as we had to change another RV, but this time we had to travel 100 miles to Salt Lake City, Utah. The reason this time was because the air conditioning had packed up and when travelling in the summer across America with no air conditioning, it’s not fun or advisable. I hate missing days off as it puts the schedule out even though we are 5 days ahead. Salt Lake City is a big place and it took a few U turns to finally find the El Monte RV rental place. Once we arrived the new RV was ready and all we had to do was transfer our belongings from one RV to the other. The move sounds simple enough but it took a while as there are 5 people living on the motor home. I had a few harsh words on the telephone to an El Monte sales rep complaining about the service we have been getting and she was very good and reassured me that when we arrive at our final destination of New York we will be reimbursed for all the trouble we have had over the last 4 weeks.

Moving on, even though it ended up being a non running day a rest day may prove crucial in the duration, especially this early into the trip. I haven’t got any medical problems as they have now past but Trevor, being a Doctor, assured me that a rest day is just as important and could be a benefit (thank you). Trevor leaves the team on Saturday to head to Los Angeles and then back home to see his beloved family (we will miss him a lot, but we all understand that it was only a 5 week trip for the Doc).

Tonight we had to settle into the new RV which seems okay at the minute but I’m not going to assume anything for another few weeks and then we will assess it again. We had a BBQ with plenty of chicken going around and I’m also starting to read my 1st book whilst on this trip (The Places in Between by Rory Stewart) where he talks about the trip across Afghanistan on foot and the knowledge he gained by surviving the Persian and Muslim customs and the kindness of strangers he met along the way.

Tonight is going to be an early night before yet another early rise for a 40 mile running session tomorrow heading out of Price, Utah.

If anybody is interested please join the ‘Keep Jackson Running Across America’ face book set up by Simon Bowsher of my official sponsor Mizuno.
