Run Across America - 20th June - Day 7
It’s the day after my birthday and I felt relaxed and rearing to get the miles in heading towards ‘Viva’ Las Vegas for the Ricky Hatton fight this coming weekend. I felt hydrated after feeling the complete opposite the previous day after drinking a few beers in very hot weather. Trevor had treated the few blisters I had due to the pounding of the uneven road on route 66 and I had found a new way of taping up my feet around the hot points.
My Mizuno trainers are doing a great job and my feet and legs apart from the few blisters are holding up well.
Today I ran 40 miles as I want to get to Las Vegas earlier on Friday so that I can hopefully make the weigh in for the big fight. The first 30 miles was relaxing but then the hot weather started to kick in and hit over 100 deg. I am a very stubborn person so the weather was not going to defeat Las Vegas in any circumstances. I completed the last 10 miles with sun burnt thighs, but I have now covered exactly 200 miles since leaving from LA 7 days ago.
Two team members ran with me at the start (Natasha and Ben) but Ben only covered 5 miles as he is not used to the running mileage, where Natasha covered her full 10 miles before going on the motor home to relax for the rest of the day.
Alex was driving the motor home for the first time and he did just as good a job as Ben has done for the trip.
The road again was pretty boring, uneven and hadn’t been treated for years, but the scenery was just extraordinary and we ran past a huge crater but couldn’t decide whether it was from up above or an old volcano. We are still undecided.
At the end of my 40 miles there was an ice cream parlour which we stopped at. The guy next to me asked what I was doing as he was reading my t-shirt and using my gift of the gab I got him to buy me my milkshake as a ‘I can’t believe want you are doing’ grin.
We may lose contact with the internet for a couple of days, but once in Las Vegas (Friday) we will get everything sent over, that’s if we can get Natasha of the MSN (wat a bad invention).
Also get this - Ben and Natasha are getting married this Saturday in Las Vegas. I thought it was a joke, so if Natasha’s family are reading this ‘it’s not my fault’.
